I think the first thing you all want out of me is some commentary on the 40-man additions, so here you go. It ended up being a bit more than anyone expected, and some additions were surprising, as were some omissions. I also had a little bit of commentary on the additions of IF Sean Kazmar and RHP Justin Miller.

The Arizona Fall League has ended. Long live the Arizona Fall League! Long live MVP Dustin Ackley, who took home the league MVP in a move that couldn’t have surprised anyone. His .581 OBP completely smashed the previous league record of .537, set by Ken Harvey. This week was an off week for him, but then again both hits he had were doubles? And he was 1-for-4 during the playoff game against Scottsdale (we lost…). Regarding that, Tenbrink also had an at-bat (grounded out), and three bullpen arms got in, with Wilhelmsen taking the loss after allowing two hits and striking out one in the fourth, though Fields and Lueke both struck out two in an inning of work, with Lueke walking one. I didn’t watch much of the game, but heard that Fields’ curve was pretty awesome.

Coming out of the season, I think that Ackley definitely raised his stock a lot, as did Lueke. Tenbrink also gained some ground mostly by keeping pace, then I’d add Fields who was good at some times and shaky at others. As to the others, Lawson hit well, and defended competently enough, but didn’t help his case much by striking out every third at-bat, Cleto bombed and struggled to find the right approach, his final game being the worst of the season by far, and Wilhelmsen lost some momentum as the season went on, though the main focus with him should just be that he logged some innings against rough competition and held his own for a while. He also managed to close the season getting a write-up in BA.

Moving down under, a lot of you came by to note that McOwen had been playing last week. That was a slip-up, as the source I’d been referring to didn’t list him (this is what I get for not doing all the work myself). McOwen is actually Rule 5 eligible, but I don’t know if a team out there would be eager to spend a pick on him. He really isn’t hurting his case though, I’ll give him that. Bantz also continues to hit well. And Maurer? He can at least say that this week was better than last.

Making the rounds in the Caribbean and Central America, there isn’t too much to add that hasn’t been covered already. Brad Nelson continues to tear the cover off the ball and terrify opposing pitchers. If he sticks with us, perhaps there would be some consideration of him for the DH spot, though with Bradley around and taking up a chunk of the payroll, I wouldn’t put great odds on it. Paredes continues to do quite well. Limonta is now joined in the Puerto Rican Winter League by Mumba Rivera, who has re-signed with the org, who will be with us until the end of time.

Updates from Venezuela include the addition of Michael Saunders to the listing, though he only managed to play one game as yesterday’s match-up was rained out. Petit is also confirmed as being part of the organization after re-signing with us, so enjoy those numbers. Grube looks as though he may have pulled out for the season, which is often the case around Thanksgiving as rosters begin to change. Liddi, Patterson, and some of the pitchers might also be gone, but I don’t know for certain. The locals should continue to stick around a while longer, and Chavez could be playing a whole ‘nother month at least, though he’s lost a little momentum this week.

I don’t have much in the way of news for the week, save for the fact that there is no news on Paxton. I’m flying back to Seattle for the Thanksgiving holiday, but was I’ll be taking my flight back to NYC Sunday evening, I’m not certain whether next week’s wrap will be up Sunday or Monday, but I’m betting Sunday evening at the latest.
