So, Mavericks manager Jim Horner stepped down on Friday to pursue a job at Texas Tech. This is odd because he had the best managerial record in Mavericks history and was the league’s Manager of the Year last season. Also because I remember his playing days. Oh well, I can always be weirded out by Eddie Menchaca leading Pulaski, and Andrew Lorraine serving as their pitching coach, and Rich Dorman being the PC in Everett. Also, Pineda made the Hot Sheet. He himself is hot... oh wait, I can't do that here can I?
Tacoma 3, Fresno 9 (SF + 13) RHP Ian Snell (5.80, L) was left in for five and two-thirds innings, which was long enough to give up nine runs on twelve hits (2 HR!) and three walks against four Ks. I’d be surprised except that I’m not. LHP Edward Paredes (6.14) struck out a pair in the next inning and a third and then RHP Mumba Rivera (3.00) pitched the ninth without incident. 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (R, .252) had three walks in the game. That was another positive thing that happened. 2B Dustin Ackley (3B, R, .296) had two hits and a walk too and that’s exciting. C Adam Moore (2B, .315) doubled and SS Chris Woodward (.234) and CF Gregory Halman (RBI, .259) both had a hit and a walk. Halman has thirty walks now. That’s one more than he had all of last season in West Tenn, though he also had two in Peoria. He’s two away from tying his single season high. I think he’s going to do it.
West Tenn 4, Tennessee 5 (CHC + 6) This could be going better. The results were bad for LHP Mauricio Robles (4.24, L), though the pitching was not really. He gave up five runs (four earned), sure, but it was on eight hits (HR), a hit batter, and a walk against nine Ks in seven innings. RHP Dan Cortes (5.63), who can really pitch in relief, struck out a pair in the eighth. 2B Matt Lawson (RBI, SB, .426) had three more hits out of the leadoff spot. He’s just really excited to be here. CF Leury Bonilla (R, PO, .253) had a hit and two walks in the game, 1B Nate Tenbrink (2B, R, RBI, .271) had two hits, and DH Johan Limonta (R, .298) and 3B Alex Liddi (3B, R, RBI, .274) both had a hit and a walk.
Rancho Cucamonga 7 (ANA + 5), High Desert 11 LHP Jonathan Hesketh (4.23, W) gave up six runs through the same number of innings (and a little more) after ten hits (2 HR!), four walks, and four Ks. The main consolation there is that the other guy was worse. Also they made Mike Trout go 0-for-5. That’s kind of amazing. RHP Blake Nation (4.90, W) had two hits, a wild pitch, and two Ks in the next two frames. RHP Wes Littleton (3.86) had a few too many runs to work with to save it and ended up allowing a run to score on two hits and a walk in the ninth. Offense! 3B-1B Rich Poythress (2B, HR, 4 R, 3 RBI, .301) had the best night, I think, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. His OPS for July is over 1.100 I think. 2B Kyle Seager (2B, RBI, .342) had another three hits in the leadoff spot and batting ahead of Poythress, DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2 R, RBI, .346) had two hits and a walk. RF Johermyn Chavez (2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, .311) and C Ralph Henriquez (CS, .297) had two hits apiece and LF Kuo-hui Lo (2B, 2 RBI, .258) doubled. Chavez has twenty-six home runs now, and Poythress, twenty-two.
Cedar Rapids 4 (ANA + 8), Clinton 10 Yes, I think I prefer this. LHP Nick Czyz (3.95, E, W) gave up a pair of runs (one earned) after four hits, a wild pitch, and five Ks in the six innings he worked. RHP John Housey (4.35) let two more plate on a hit, two walks, and a K in the following inning and a third, and then RHP Jorden Merry (6.14) walked one, threw a wild pitch, and struck out one in the final two outs of the eighth, scoring both of Housey’s runs in the process. RHP Forrest Snow (3.00) had a hit and two Ks in the ninth. SS Nick Franklin (2B, 2 R, .287) had three hits in the game and RF James Jones (R, .247) also reached three times with a hit and two walks. 2B Luis Nunez (R, 2 RBI, SB, .286), 1B Vinnie Catricala (R, .269), C Blake Ochoa (2B, R, 3 RBI, PB, .308), 3B Mario Martinez (R, RBI, .251), and CF Daniel Carroll (2B, 2 R, RBI, SB, .271) all reached twice, most of them with two hits, but Catricala had two walks and Carroll had a hit and a walk.
Everett 3, Tri-City 0 (COL + 1) (fourteen innings) LHP Edlando Seco (2.52, PO) had what seems to be a pretty typical outing for him, in that he went six innings, allowed two hits, and had four each of walks and Ks. RHP Willy Kesler (2.05) walked two and struck out three in the next two and a third innings. RHP Stephen Pryor (0.49) turned int two and two-thirds perfect innings after that, ringing up four along the way. This brought on RHP Ogui Diaz (8.10, W), not the likeliest hero, but hero he was as he pitched three perfect innings while striking out two. So everyone in the lineup struck out at least twice, most of the lineup three times, Rivers four, and we still won in spite of twenty-four Ks. In the fourteenth, 2B Terry Serrano (R, 1-4, 2 BB, .290) walked, Anston singled, and after a wild pitch moved up both runners, 3B Kevin Mailloux (3B, R, 2 RBI, 2-6, .262) tripled them in and scored on a throwing error. That’s about all you need to know.
Kingsport 6 (NYM - 2), Pulaski 4 (ten innings) The M’s can’t seem to win consistently against bad teams. RHP George Mieses (2.79) did okay, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits, a walk, a wild pitch, a balk, and three Ks. That’s a lot of balls in play. RHP Bryan Leigh (1.35) let another run score on two hits, a balk, and a couple of Ks in the final two innings. RHP Matt Bischoff (2.18, L) ended up with his first pro loss as he scored two runs on two hits, a free pass and a pair of Ks in the tenth. 3B Jorge Agudelo (2B, RBI, CS, .298) was the one batter with three hits in the game, but a bunch of others had two, including DH Andrew Giobbi (HR, .294), who hit his first pro home run, C Hassiel Jimenez (2 2B, R, PB, .263), and LF Derek Poppert (RBI, SB, .233). SS Jake Schlander (2B, .297) doubled and 2B Jetsy Extrano (SB, R, .247) had a single and a walk. I think that fifteen Ks by the M’s in the game was probably an issue.
Peoria Mariners 0, AZL Giants 2 LHP Cesar Jimenez (0.00) pitched the first inning and struck out one. This was a name I didn’t really expect to ever see again. Fortunately, the Paniagua who took the mound for the Giants was not Jose or I might have lost it. RHP Eric Valdez (4.20, E, L) took a loss he didn’t deserve, his one run being unearned and coming on three hits and two walks against nine Ks in five innings of work. Similarly, RHP Steve Landazuri (0.00) debuted with an unearned run scoring against him on two hits and a walk in the seventh. RHP Michael Aviles (9.49) gave up a hit and struck out a pair in the eighth. 3B Jose Martinez (2 E, .145), in spite of two errors, is the only one I have to talk about because he had a hit and two walks and no one else really did much of anything.
VSL Phillies 2, Aguirre Mariners 3 RHP Angel Aga (2.96) had a weird looking eight-inning stint where a run scored on ten hits and three Ks. By contrast, LHP Oscar Bravo (2.45, S) gave up a run in one inning on two hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk. DH Miguel Brito (R, RBI, .289) and 3B Yidid Batista (RBI, .252) both had a couple of hits and 1B Ivan Ramirez (2B, R, .343) and C Ricardo Gonzalez (2B, R, .153) both doubled.
The DSL isn’t reporting the Mariners game. I don’t know what’s up with that. I may just end up having to write about two on Saturday.
